Internet shut, crackdown on protesters, and mounting death toll have led to a massive escalation in Iran protests that started on December 28 with a shutdown in Tehran Bazaar. Following a call for mass demonstration by the country’s exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, rights groups accused Iranian security forces of shooting at protesters as the death toll mounted from a crackdown by authorities.
So far, at least 45 people have been killed, while more than 2,260 others have been detained, as per human rights agencies. This comes after twelve days of protests in the country over its ailing economy, which have now snowballed into a full-blown nationwide movement against the economic downturn. Anti-government protests are intensifying in Iran due to rising inflation and a falling currency. Protests have spread to 100 major Iranian cities. The protests, which have been ongoing in Iran for nearly two weeks, are becoming increasingly violent.
Meanwhile, exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, son of former Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, has issued a major political signal. Pahlavi, who lives in exile in the United States, has made it clear that he is fully prepared to return to Iran and lead the national process of liberation from dictatorship. He stated, given the current situation, that the time is near.
Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi posted on Twitter on Friday (January 9, 2025) that millions of Iranians demanded their freedom tonight. In response, the Iranian government has cut all communication lines, shutting down the internet and even cutting off landlines. They may also attempt to jam satellite signals.
Anti-government protests have been raging in Iran for nearly two weeks. Meanwhile, exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, son of former Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, issued a significant statement. Expressing gratitude to the US President, Reza Pahlavi said, “I want to thank President Trump, the leader of the free world, for reiterating his promise to hold the government accountable. Now is the time for others, including European leaders, to heed his call and break their silence. We should act more forcefully in support of the Iranian people.”
