Tehran: In a major diplomatic achievement, Iranian authorities have confirmed on Friday that Iran has permitted two Indian-flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This gesture is expected to bring instant relief to India, as the country has been facing an acute crisis of cooking gas due to the escalation of the US-Iran conflict.

The diplomatic efforts have been quite high, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi. During the telephone call, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his priority to Iranian President Masoud that the “uninterrupted flow of goods and energy” is at the top of India’s priority list. Iranian Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, also added, “Iran and India are friends… we have a common fate.”

The move came hours after phone conversations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian – their first since the start of the Iran-US conflict – and external affairs minister S Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi.

Earlier on Friday, Iranian ambassador Mohammad Fathali indicated that Indian vessels would be granted safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route that transports nearly 50% of India’s oil imports.
