New York Mayor: Indian-origin Zohran Mamdani has become the new mayor of New York. Zohran Mamdani has registered a historic victory in the New York mayoral election. With this victory, he has become the city’s first Indian-origin, Muslim and youngest mayor. In the results declared today (Wednesday), he registered a big victory by leaving behind both his rivals. He has got more than 50% votes. 9.48 lakh people have voted in his favor. Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was contesting as an independent candidate, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Mamdani’s victory is a major blow to Donald Trump, who had consistently opposed him. He had threatened to cut off funding to New York if Mamdani won. It will be interesting to see the resulting war between Mamdani and Trump.
Mamdani was declared mayor-elect by the Associated Press. With 80 per cent of the votes in, Mamdani has a share of 50.3 per cent, closely followed by democratic opponent Andrew Cuomo at 41.6 per cent. Republican candidate Curtis Silwa trails with 7.2 per cent of the vote.
US President Donald Trump warned New York City voters that if Mamdani became mayor, New York would be completely ruined economically and socially. On Monday, before the voting, Trump officially endorsed former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Trump said that if Mamdani won the election, he would send only the minimum necessary federal funds to New York City. Trump called Mamdani a “communist” and claimed that under his leadership, New York would not survive, let alone succeed. He also said that if the choice in the election was between Mamdani and Cuomo, people should vote for Cuomo—whether they like him or not—because he was capable of handling the office.
