India on Thursday participated as an observer nation in the first meeting of the Board of Peace, an initiative of US President Donald Trump on the Gaza crisis. India is not a formal member of the initiative, but New Delhi was represented at the meeting held in Washington, DC. The board, announced this year, comprises 27 countries, including Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Israel. However, the group does not include Palestinian representatives, which is being discussed internationally.

Namgya Khampa, Charge d’Affaires of the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, represented India at the session held at the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace, which Trump has described as a key platform for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip and the establishment of lasting peace in the region.

India has not yet officially announced its participation in the initiative, which Trump is presenting as a key means for rebuilding the Gaza Strip.

This initiative is also being seen as an alternative to the United Nations. Trump has said that the Board of Peace could replace the UN in the future, as he believes the global body has not lived up to its potential.

The board, announced this year, includes twenty-seven countries, including Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, as well as Israel. However, the group does not include Palestinian representatives, a matter that is being discussed internationally.

India was not present at the launch ceremony in Davos on January 22, where Trump formally announced the initiative. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the global leaders invited to join the board during the second phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire process.
