India pledged to provide $500,000 in emergency aid after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake destroyed Vanuatu on December 17, 2024. The South Pacific Ocean earthquake, which was located close to Vanuatu’s coast, left behind a great deal of damage and fatalities.
India sent its sympathies and assistance for relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction to the government and people of Vanuatu. “As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and as a gesture of solidarity with the friendly people of Vanuatu, the Government of India extends relief assistance of USD 500,000 to support relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release.
In times of natural disaster, India has a history of helping Vanuatu. This assistance is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s November 2019 announcement of India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI), which includes disaster risk reduction and management as a major component.
