After the controversy and discomfort in ties between India and Nepal over the map redesigning of Nepal, the Nepal PM K P Oli Sharma went ahead for a constitutional amendment to incorporate territorial rearrangement. However, the constitutional amendment bill regarding the revised map of Nepal was not introduced in its Parliament on Wednesday.
The revised map was a controversial one as it included Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulekh as part of Nepal’s territory. The opposition party withdrew the idea and held back the amendment. The Nepal Communist Party still needs the majority in the Lower House too.
A week ago, Nepal was all set for a cartographic confrontation with India when it unveiled a new political map that placed Kalapani within its border. However, On 27 May, In the parliament session, the constitutional amendment was removed from the list of the agenda proposed. The opposition party stated that the amendment would create a rift in their relationship with India over the territorial orientation.
To this, India responded sternly and proposed a diplomatic discussion on the territorial enlargement. With the announcement of the contemporary map, both the nations waged a ‘cartographic war’. The construction of a road via Lipulekh in the claimed Nepalese boundary led to mass protest in Nepal. However, the research data and the political theories favoring the protest cited their own reason and that ideological explanation proposed Nepal to establish a new territorial definition of the boundary.
