A critical fuel shortage had left the tour company’s helicopter involved in Thursday’s tragic crash in New York City had suffered beforehand, the CEO of the tour company involved has confirmed. The pilot of the helicopter indicated fuel problems shortly before the crash, said Michael Roth head of New York Helicopter Charter, talking to a news agency. All six people on board were killed, including the pilot.
Among the victims was Agustin Escobar, president of the Spanish branch of the tech giant Siemens. New York was a family vacation; he and his wife were there with their three children. Earlier, the tour company had posted photos of the executive and his family on social media in which they danced before the tragedy happened.
Roth said he was ‘absolutely devastated’ by the accident and offered his profound sorrow over who lost his life. He also noted that he and his three decades in the helicopter industry were never witness to anything similar to what may have caused the fatal crash. What I have seen in terms of the helicopter falling down was the only thing I know, that the main rotor blades weren’t on the helicopter. Roth said he has not seen anything like that in his 30 years in the business.
The crash was confirmed by authorities at around 3:15 pm local time. Just earlier that day, they had arrived from Barcelona and were with their family, law enforcement sources said. The reason for the crash remains undetermined, and Roth speculated the crash could possibly have been the result of mechanical failure of some sort on the rotor blades or a bird strike.
Authorities are trying to find out what happened leading to the tragic crash and piecing together the final minutes of the doomed flight.
