China is facing a growing wave of criticism following an incident, in the South China Sea. Reports indicate that one of its coast guard vessels utilized a water cannon against a boat from the Philippines. The incident took place near the Second Thomas Shoal.

In response to this event the United States and its allies are contemplating expediting plans for patrols in the regions waterways. Video footage captured the moment when a large Chinese Coast Guard ship sprayed water at the boat as it attempted to deliver supplies to a garrison of marines stationed on the shoal.

The United States, being an ally of Manila has already denounced China’s actions. Reassured the Philippines of its commitment to defense under their 1951 US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty. A spokesperson from the US State Department stated that any armed attack on vessels, aircraft or armed forces – including their Coast Guard in the South China Sea – would activate their mutual defense obligations.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has also strongly condemned Chinas maneuvers and unlawful use of water cannons during this incident. The PCG has released a statement expressing their disapproval, on their Facebook page.
