Islamabad: Pakistan Election Commission (ECP) and President President Arif Alvi agreed on February 8, 2024, as the date for holding general elections in the country, the President of Pakistan informed late Thursday.

Dr. Arif Alvi, the President of Pakistan reposted a tweeted, “After a detailed discussion the meeting unanimously agreed to hold General Elections in the country on 8th February 2024”.

Pakistan’s Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan (ECP) Sikandar Sultan Raja, along with Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Mansoor Usman Awan and four members of the Election Commission of Pakistan, met President Arif Alvi at the President’s House. The meeting was held after the Supreme Court of the country ordered the commission to consult the President on the poll date.

The 90-day limit of holding elections after the dissolution of the National Assembly is set to expire on November 7, which the ECP decided to ignore to carry out a delimitation exercise in the light of the new census held countrywide in March and April of this year.

Since the National Assembly was dissolved three days before the end of its constitutional term, the Constitution mandates that elections be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the assembly by November 7.

The country is already in the midst of a major economic crisis and has been gripped by political uncertainity ever since the Imran Khan government was removed through a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly in April 2022.
