New violence has struck the Bara district of Nepal as masses of youthful protesters who call themselves Gen Z got back on the streets less than 24 hours after bloody confrontations with the cadres of CPN-UML. The new protests caused direct alarm among the officials, with the government placing a complete curfew between 1 pm and 8 pm (local time) in an attempt to curb the situation.

Groups of demonstrators kept assembling even in Simara in the morning despite the heavy security presence as they faced the security officers and disturbed normal movement. The decision to put back the curfew was confirmed by Assistant Chief District Officer Chhabiraman Subedi who said that there was a need to get the tense situation under control. The announcement came after several attacks on Wednesday, where at minimum 6 Gen Z protesters were wounded.

The situation in the district has been heating up before the March 5, 2026 elections, especially when senior leadership of the CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal -Unified Marxist-Leninist) declared their intention to pay a visit to the area. Their planned visit aroused dissatisfaction between the youth group which has been publicly complaining about poor political leadership and governance.

With the escalation of clashes around Simara Airport, police had to use several rounds of teargas to break crowds. The case had become so tense that the officials at the airport suspended all its operations citing safety issues to passengers and workers.

The unrest this week is only two months following the occurrence of one of the deadliest waves of Gen Z protests in Nepal. In September, at least 76 individuals were killed during countrywide demonstrations after being angered by a short-term government ban on social media sites. The bloody unrest eventually forced KP Sharma Oli, the then Prime Minister and UML Chairman to step down of office. The following day, a 73-year-old former Chief Justice Sushila Karki became the first woman to be sworn in as prime minister of Nepal in order to govern a transitional government.
