Gaza has been under ongoing fire and bombardment from the land, air and sea for 24 hours – it hasn’t stopped at all throughout the day and night. The latest bombardment has targeted a home in al-Nasr neighbourhood that is a less than 1km away from al-Shifa hospital.

Ever since the first attack on October 7, an estimated 3000 Palestinians from Gaza who were working in Israel when the war started had been forced to return to the enclave. Thousands were believed to had gone missing amid a campaign of mass arrests after October 7.

Israeli human rights NGO Gisha has issued a statement calling for the release of Gaza workers who were detained in Israel during the recent war. The statement comes after the Israeli cabinet on Friday decided to return the workers to Gaza.

Gisha says that, together with other human rights groups such as HaMoked, it has submitted “letters, petitions and individual inquiries to Israeli authorities regarding hundreds of Gaza residents, including both workers and people who had entered Israel with permits to receive medical treatment, who were present in Israel on October 7 and had since been unlawfully, secretly detained by Israeli authorities.”

Gisha says that the Israeli government has not provided any explanation for the detention of these individuals, and that many of them have been held incommunicado, with no access to lawyers or family members. Gisha also says that the Israeli government has refused to release a list of the names of the detainees, or to disclose their locations.

Gisha is calling on the Israeli government to immediately release all Gaza residents who are being held unlawfully in Israeli detention. Gisha also calls on the Israeli government to provide a full explanation for the detention of these individuals, and to ensure that they are treated humanely and have access to legal representation.
