According to reports from Wednesday, new violence along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border has led to the deaths of many soldiers and civilians. Conflict began late at night on Tuesday across many sections of the border with both sides claiming heavy casualties.
Pakistan’s army reported Taliban fighters attempted two major assaults on counter-terrorism posts in both the south-western and north-western sector of the border. Reports also indicate that these attacks were foiled, with the killing of roughly 20 Taliban militants on Wednesday close to Spin Boldak, on the other side of border in southern Kandahar province, according to AFP.
In a statement, the Pakistan Army noted Taliban attacks were executed “through divided villages in the area, with no regard for the civil population,” and that an additional estimate of 30 Taliban fighters were likely killed overnight along the northwestern border.
As for Afghan officials, their reports indicated at least 15 civilians killed, and dozens wounded amid the escalations of violence. This latest increase of violence highlights the ongoing tensions between both countries amid border disputes and movements of militants leading to deadly altercations.
