New York, USA: After Britain, now France has also raised the issue of permanent membership of India in the United Nations Security Council. Nathalie Broadhurst, France’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has said that she supports India, Germany, Brazil, and Japan as permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The emergence of new forces needs to be taken into account, she said. Therefore, it should take into account those countries that are able to take responsibility for permanent membership in the powerful world. France said, its position in the Security Council is stable and well-known. However, they want the Security Council to have more representatives from around the world, so as to strengthen its authority and effectiveness.
Earlier, Britain also supported India’s permanent membership. Britain’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward, has called for new permanent seats for India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil. Barbara Woodward said that Britain has been demanding the expansion of the Security Council for a long time. “We support new permanent seats for India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil, as well as permanent representation for Africa”, she said.
For the unversed, there are currently five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. These include America, Russia, China, France, and Britain. In view of the global population and economy and new geopolitical conditions, there has been a demand for increasing the number of permanent member countries for a long time. With a push from the active members, permanent membership of India in the UNSC might soon be effective.
