Former Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has made his first appearance in the media since he resigned, after weeks of anti-corruption protests that were led by Gen-Z protestors, which eventually ousted the former government. Oli resurfaced after several years of political silence by attending a public rally which had been organised by the student wing of the CPN-UML, the Rastriya Yuwa Sangh, in Bhaktapur.

Oli had not been seen since he had resigned on September 9, at first seeking refuge under the Army of Nepal banner and has since been transferred to a temporary accommodation. The party deputy general secretary, Pradeep Gyawali, confirmed his coming back, which occurred after a meeting of the CPN-UML party secretariat, and so his coming back was planned.

This appearance of the former PM is almost three weeks following violent protests across the country that have been majorly instigated by students and young citizens to take a stronger hold on the government to ensure more accountability and transparency. These protests, commonly known as the Gen-Z uprising, were the bloodiest uprising in Nepal since the 2006 pro-democracy movement.

The protests started on September 8, and unfortunately, at least 21 protesters, the majority of them students, were killed on the first day. The next day saw 39 more deaths, with 15 of them coming from severe burns, and 14 more were recorded in the next ten days. The number of people killed has so far reached 74, which indicates the extent and the high degree of the civil unrest.

Even though Oli did not directly comment on the protests in his first appearance in public, both political analysts and citizens are paying close attention to his return, as the country remains politically unpredictable and the tense situation is still ongoing. His look indicates that he is taking a tentative move into the political arena again, despite the country not yet having fully recovered, still in the aftermath of the Gen-Z uprising.
