On Thursday, a court of Pakistan military sentenced former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Faiz Hameed to 14 years in prison. The sentence was awarded by the Field General Court Martial (FGCM), after Hameed had been found guilty of numerous things such as taking part in political activities and contravening the Official Secrets Act among other serious claims.
In an official release by the Pakistan military court, Hameed was charged with four major offenses; political activities, the infringement of the official secrets act in a way that was considered a threat to the national security, misuse of powers and government resources and wrongful loss to civilian parties. Following what the court termed as long and arduous court process, Hameed was convicted on all the counts.
Hameed was an ISI director general between 2019 and 2021, and during his rule, he was broadly said to have been one of the strongest in the intelligence community in Pakistan. He took over the high office after ousting the then-ISI chief and the current Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Hameed has close connections with former Prime Minister Imran Khan who was imprisoned on several charges since 2023, making his sentencing a political issue of high-impact in Pakistan.
The previous intelligence head was arrested in 2010 when the Supreme Court gave an order of an internal investigation. The investigation was based on the claims of the Top City project scam, a private residential development near Islamabad that allegedly included the use of power and shoddy financial transactions.
Although the military court did not publish any other information about the judgment, the decision highlights a position of the judiciary in punishing high ranking officials on the account of violating trust, misusing power, and engaging in activities that are considered harmful to the state.
