The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, is said to be putting his plans of starting a third party in U.S. politics on hold in favor of concentrating back to his companies, whilst maintaining relations with the powerful republicans. In some accounts, Musk has made it clear to his inner circle that his plan to start yet another party, the America Party, was not dead, but it was not his current primary focus. But instead, he is opting to avoid outright political confrontation at the moment, although there is talk of him mulling the option of funding U.S. Vice President JD Vance should he choose to run in 2028.

Musk announced that the America Party exists in July through his social media platform, X. In a posting, he was harsher on both the Democrats and the Republicans, saying that they had indulged in what he called spending without commonsense spending and corruption. Musk stated that the U.S. acted like a one-party system based on self-interest rather than a democracy.” You want a new party in politics, and by 2 to 1 you shall have it!” Musk had postulated that a poll he conducted on X had found out. His declaration was broadly perceived as a response to the increasing dissatisfaction with the two-party system and his own falling out with former President Donald Trump.

Musk at one point supported Trump, claiming to donate $250 m to his campaign, but soon fell out of agreement with his spending and taxing policies. The divide intensified when Musk resigned his position in the government, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), on which he was mandated to eliminate federal expenditure.

Third-party nominees, including the Libertarian Party and Green Party candidates, have had in the past little or no success in breaking through, and Musk was obviously drawing a lot of attention.
