Srinagar: Pakistan was struck by an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 on the Richter scale on Saturday around 1 pm, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers. Tremors from this earthquake were felt in parts of Kashmir, causing concern among residents in the region.

According to the NCS, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at a latitude of 33.70 degrees North and a longitude of 72.43 degrees East, placing it within Pakistani territory. The shallow depth of the earthquake, at 10 km, often leads to stronger ground shaking compared to deeper earthquakes, potentially increasing the risk of damage near the epicenter.

While the tremors were felt in Kashmir, initial reports did not indicate any immediate loss of life or significant damage to property in either Pakistan or the areas of Kashmir where the tremors were experienced. Authorities are likely monitoring the situation closely and assessing for any delayed reports of impact in the affected regions.

Pakistan is located in a seismically active region where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making it prone to earthquakes of varying intensities. This recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the geological forces at play in the region and the importance of preparedness for seismic events. Residents in earthquake-prone areas are often advised to take precautionary measures such as knowing evacuation routes and having emergency kits ready.
