According to a British maritime security agency, a drone attack in the Red Sea near Yemen early on Sunday morning damaged a merchant ship, although no injuries were recorded.
Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen, who claim to be acting in support of Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas conflict in the Gaza Strip, have been attacking ships in and around the Red Sea on a regular basis for months.
The incident took place approximately 120 kilometers (65 nautical miles) west of the Yemeni port city of Hodeida, according to the British Navy’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.
“A merchant vessel’s master reports that an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) struck the ship and caused damage. After confirming that every member of the crew is safe, the ship is sailing to its next port of call.” Said security agency. Also added “Authorities are investigating,” without naming the perpetrator of the attack.
The US Central Command claimed on Saturday that it had destroyed three Huthi nautical drones in the previous 24 hours. The US Central Command has been carrying out retaliatory operations against the group due to their attacks on ships. Additionally, it stated that the group had fired three anti-ship missiles into the Gulf of Aden; however, no serious harm or casualties were recorded.
