The Gaza Strip was struck by the heavy rains, and massive floods hit the tent villages that Palestinians displaced by the current conflict that has taken toll in the last two years lived. Homemade shelters were already weak due to continuous use, and flooded with ankle-deep puddles, which forced people to search dry places in their tents.
Families that have spent months in such encampments were exposed to very difficult conditions of winter, with cold winds and damp houses, making daily life more and more demanding. Most of the tents have been torn and mended and cannot hold the heavy rain that falls down and leaves the children and the aged especially exposed. The locals reported the condition to be hopeless, as the availability of simple needs like warm clothing, blankets, and dry bedding was low.
According to humanitarian organizations working in the region, there is an imminent danger of worsening the humanitarian crisis in Gaza where thousands of citizens still live in temporary shelters that are crowded and very poorly equipped. The proliferation of water borne diseases by the stagnant water in the camps has also attracted attention by health officials, and the situation is aggravated by lack of enough sanitation facilities.
The fact that there is no long-term solution to the issue of housing has been a cause of frustration among many displaced Palestinians who point out that recurring rainfall is a factor that opens up the in-effectiveness of existing relief efforts. Aid groups and community volunteers have been working around the clock to distribute the emergency supplies such as tarpaulins, waterproof covers, and warm blankets but the demand remains to surpass the resources.
During the winter, the events in Gaza are still in danger. The convergence of severe weather and continuous displacement proves the dire need of long-term international humanitarian intervention. The inhabitants, who are in between the harsh weather conditions and the after effect of war are left to another season of uncertainty in hope that they will be provided with shelters that will resist both the cold and rain.
