The Amazon in Brazil has suffered major destruction through deforestation as an area 2.5 times the size of Delhi has been destroyed. A preliminary Government Record on Friday suggested that the area from where the green belt has been destroyed is as large as five times the size of New York City. The National Space Research Agency reportedly released a data which shows that 3988 square km (1540 square miles) area in Amazon suffered deforestation in the first half of 2022.
The Amazon forest in Brazil encountered record breaking fires in the month of June in 15 years. Experts in Brazil blame the right wing President Bolsonaro for withdrawing environmental protections for profit whereas Luiz Inacio who supported a decline in deforestation during his tenure from 2003 to 2010 is being banked on by environmentalists.
The lush green jungle near the roadway west of Manaus has been turned in to strewn with barren land and dried leaves. A deforestation researcher at Wood Well Climate Research Centre said that rising deforestation in Amazon will result in more unusual high levels of fire in the forest in the coming months.
