1993 Mumbai blasts mastermind and India’s most wanted Dawood Ibrahim has reportedly been in Pakistan for decades. The devastating bombings resulted in the killing of over 250 people and left thousands injured.
Indian authorities have often said that they believe Ibrahim lives in Karachi’s upmarket Clifton area. But Pakistan has often denied his presence in that country.
Dawood Ibrahim, the name hangs heavy in the air of Mumbai, a specter of a bygone era, yet woven into the fabric of the city’s underbelly. He is a legend whispered in fear, a fugitive cast in the starkest shades of crime and terror. Born in 1955, Dawood rose from the grimy lanes of Dongri to become the enigmatic head of the D-Company, a syndicate with tentacles reaching across continents.
His ascent was swift and ruthless. From petty thefts in his teens, he graduated to organized crime, aligning himself with notorious figures like Karim Lala and Haji Mastan. By the late 1970s, he had carved his own empire, built on extortion, smuggling, and drug trafficking. The 1980s saw him embroiled in a bloody turf war with the Pathan gang, a period marked by brazen shootings and chilling assassinations.
The turning point came in 1993 with the Mumbai bombings, a heinous act of terror etched in India’s collective memory. Ibrahim, believed to be the mastermind, became a symbol of unbridled evil, with an Interpol Red Notice and a $25 million bounty on his head. He vanished into the labyrinthine alleys of Karachi, Pakistan, his opulent mansion a mocking testament to his impunity.
Dawood’s life in exile is shrouded in whispers. Rumors paint him as a recluse, living in fear of assassination attempts and internal power struggles. Yet, his reach remains long, his D-Company tentacles still squeezing the financial arteries of Mumbai. Real estate, Bollywood financing, cricket betting – his shadow flickers behind every illicit corner.
In January 2023, his nephew told National Investigation Agency, that he had remarried in Pakistan and, lives with his family in Karachi.
