Cyclone Senyar: A day after cyclone Senyar has been declared over the virgin waters of the Strait of Malacca, the South-west Bay of Bengal region, mainly parts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, remain threatened. India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted a well-marked low-pressure area over the South-west Bay and the area adjoining Sri Lanka on Wednesday night.

IMD said that Cyclone Senyar lies 850 Kilometers Southeast of Car Nicobar, the northernmost island of the Nicobar Islands. It was predicted to weaken into a depression by today evening. However, in a latest tweet on X posted at 1 PM today, IMD said that the deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka coast is likely to move nearly north-northwestwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 12 hours.

In another post on X, IMD announced cyclone Ditwah. It said that when the latest depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal intensifies into a cyclonic storm, it will be called Cyclone ‘Ditwah’, according to the roster which lists names of tropical cyclones over north Indian Ocean.

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia reported that Cyclone Senyar has moved away from Indian territory and has headed towards Malaysia. According to the Met Malaysia director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, the cyclone is near Sumatra and is termed as rare.
