Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst flood disasters in decades after Cyclone Ditwah caused catastrophic flooding and landslides, resulting in more than 400 people reported dead or missing. With the island nation struggling, India responded by launching Operation Sagar Bandhu and deploying troops from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Air Force to provide search, rescue, and relief assistance.
According to the weekly forecast, Chennai and Thiruvallur are likely to receive extremely heavy rain, with maximum temperatures around 27 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures near 23 degrees Celsius. “The Deep Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm Ditwah) over westcentral and adjoining areas of southwest Bay of Bengal and North Tamil Nadu & South Andhra Pradesh coasts recurved slowly southwestwards with the speed of 3kmph during the past 6 hours, weakened into a Depression”, wrote IMD on X.
More than 11 lakh people have been affected and nearly 2 lakh displaced and housed in safety centres, the Disaster Management Centre said in a statement on Sunday evening (November 30). Cyclone Ditwah brought record rainfall to several districts and triggered multiple landslides in Sri Lanka.
