Chennai: Cyclone Ditwah, which originated southeast of Sri Lanka last week, has caused mass destruction across Southeast Asian countries, with the death toll growing over 1,300. The cyclone has caused deadly floods in Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
The cyclone moved slowly northwards along Sri Lanka’s coastline, lingering there for a long time before moving parallel to the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh-Puducherry coast.
Cyclone Ditwah has continued to impact the Indian weather conditions. In the morning bulletin, India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced Heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Rayalaseema. Very Heavy rainfall at isolated places over Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall at isolated places over Kerala.
It also predicted very dense fog (visibility <50 m) reported in isolated pockets of Odisha; dense fog (visibility 50-199 m): reported in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and cold wave conditions at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
Cyclone Ditwah: India Activates Operation Sagar Bandhu
India has activated Operation Sagar Bandhu, a major humanitarian mission to assist Sri Lanka after the devastation caused by Cyclone Dwa. With the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force working jointly, rescue, relief, and restoration efforts are in full swing.
From medical and engineering teams on the ground to naval ships delivering relief supplies and IAF aircraft airlifting stranded civilians, India has once again emerged as the Indian Ocean region’s most dependable first responder. IAF C-17 airlifted a Para Field Hospital with equipment and 73 medical personnel from Agra to Colombo.
IAF Mi-17 helicopters transported 8,250 kg of essential supplies and evacuated 60 survivors and 5 children, including 03 Australian and 02 German nationals, along with critically ill patients and a pregnant woman. Over 2,000 Indians and foreign nationals have already been evacuated as India continues to provide comprehensive humanitarian assistance under its Mahasagar vision.
