Birgunj: The Parsa District Administration Office (DAO) has imposed an extension of the curfew in Birgunj city due to religious tensions that have erupted because of a controversial TikTok video. It grew after both groups were disobedient to an early curfew proclamation, and they conducted parallel demonstrations throughout the city. To counter this, the government has gone on high alert to ensure that it curbs the protests to ensure that people are safe.
First, a curfew had been declared on Monday, January 5, between 6 PM (local time) to 8 AM (local time), on Tuesday, January 6. But as tensions are still high with the possibility of violence still present the administration has now extended the curfew up to 1 PM (local time) on Tuesday. The prohibitory order is applicable in 4 locations in Birgunj Metropolitan City: Bus Park, Nagwa, Inarwa (East), Sirsia River (West), Gandak Chowk (North), and Shankaracharya Gate (South). The order forbids the movement of residents in and out of these areas, the holding of gatherings, demonstrations, processions or any public meeting in these areas.
The government has indicated that the security officers have been given the right to use force including shooting at will in case the curfew is breached. People have been encouraged to go home and stay, unless there is a necessity to do so. The individuals who are required to go out to handle emergencies are directed to liaise with the security personnel in their immediate surroundings or call the local authorities through the emergency number 100.
Officials stressed that the curfew is going to restore law and order and further worsening of violence. The conflicts arose upon the release of a TikTok video that created social unrest in the city, and people went to the streets in protest. The government has urged the citizens and leaders of these communities to calm down and observe the curfew to the letter in order to prevent any additional casualties or destruction.
The administration keeps a close check on the situation, and more actions can be undertaken when necessary.
