Washington DC: In the midst of the growing competition, between the United States and China officials from both countries have been participating in meetings. The US State Department has now extended an invitation to Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister to visit Washington. This invitation comes after Qin Gang, his predecessor, was unexpectedly removed from the position after seven months.
Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the State Department confirmed that they are hopeful Minister Wang will accept this invitation. However, no specific date for the visit has been announced yet.
The diplomatic engagement between the US and China continues, as evidenced by a meeting at the State Department with Chinese diplomat Yang Tao.
The personnel change within China’s Foreign Ministry came as a surprise when Qin Gang, who had previously served as an ambassador to the US was suddenly replaced by Wang Yi on July 25th. The reasons for this switch were not publicly. Qin has not been seen in public since June.
Wang Yi, who had previously held the position of minister before this change took place, has now resumed his role. This highlights Beijing’s intention to maintain consistency in its foreign policy approach. Prior, to being reappointed as a minister, Wang served as director of the Chinese Communist Partys Foreign Affairs Commission Office. A role he continues to hold.
Antony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, had a meeting with Wang Yi during the ASEAN summit in Indonesia. This highlights the dialogue between the United States and China.
