Once again, tensions have risen between Pakistan and Afghanistan, despite an agreement for a ceasefire. Late last night, the Taliban reported that airstrikes by Pakistan on Afghan territory resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people. Among the deceased were three local Afghan cricketers, a sad loss lamented by the Afghan cricket board. This occurred mere hours after, according to reports, both countries had given their consent to extend a ceasefire for 48 hours until ongoing discussions in Doha took place.
The catalyst to this unrest stems from last week, when explosions took place in Kabul, which were misattributed to Pakistan, coinciding with the visit of Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi to India. Following this visitation, relations declined even further. Pakistan denied engaging in any involvement relative to the explosions in Kabul, but affirmed that its security forces killed 30 militants in raids in Pakistan targeting what are referred to as their Taliban hideouts.
Clashes along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border took place overnight. Pakistan accused Afghanistan of “exploiting a game of fire and blood” while the Taliban claimed their actions were retaliatory, asserting Pakistan committed an aggression against Afghan sovereignty. The situation remains tenuous as diplomacy continues without a Ceasefire.
