Toronto: Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau has resigned from his post. The Canadian Prime Minister has announced his resignation. He has also had to resign as the leader of his Liberal Party. He has taken this decision amid criticism of his government and personal criticism. Trudeau announced his resignation in his address to the country. Along with this, he has also announced the adjournment of the Canadian Parliament till March 24.
Trudeau stated that ongoing “internal battles” have led him to conclude he “cannot be the best option” for the upcoming Canada election.
Mark Carney, might resume the Prime Minister office. Mark Carney the former governor of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, said he’s considering entering the race to replace Justin Trudeau as Canada’s prime minister. Carney said he’s “encouraged and honored by the support that I’ve already been hearing” from Liberal lawmakers and supporters “who want us to move forward with positive change and a winning economic plan.”
Justin Trudeau will remain in office until a new leader of the Liberal Party is appointed.
Once an ally of Justin Trudeau, Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), has announced his intention to present a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government when Parliament reconvenes on January 27, 2025.
The political crisis of Trudeau deepened when he brought serious allegations against India in September 2023 for the first time, accusing the Indian government’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
Further, Trudeau claimed that India was sponsoring some criminal activities on Canadian soil, a claim vehemently denied by New Delhi.
While India-Canada relations took a massive hit after these allegations, the diplomatic fallout from Trudeau’s claims was severe for his leadership in Canada, which has a significant Indian population. After the Nijjar claim, New Delhi expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled its envoy to Ottawa.
