Tuesday night was filled with misfortune after a bus that was carrying Shiite pilgrims from Pakistan to Iraq rolled over in central Iran and killed at least 28 people. Yazd Province was the scene of the emergency, which occurred according to the words of Mohammad Ali Malekzadeh, a local official. The state-operating IRNA news agency aired specific information about the accident.
The bus, laden with a total number of 51 passengers, was on its way to Iraq for the Arbaeen, an essential event in the Shiite religious calendar that marks 40 days after the death of a saintly Shiite figure in the seventh century. Both the passengers and the driver perished in the tragedy while on their way to this vital pilgrimage event.
Apart from the 28 people who were confirmed dead, another 23 persons suffered various degrees of injury from the incident. Among these, 14 were said to be critical. The local emergency services immediately arrived at the scene and attempted to render aid and take the injured to nearby hospitals.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is looking into the evidence in an attempt to determine the cause of the crash, which has received much attention because of the number of deaths and the fact that it is a pilgrimage. Thus, one must acknowledge the difficulties and dangers of long-distance travel and the amplified risks to people on religious pilgrimage to sacred places.
The sad incident has attracted sympathy and support from all the different regions and the world at large. In this investigation, more effort will be directed towards identifying circumstances that contributed to this disastrous bus crash and all efforts to prevent such unhappy occurrences in future. The death of passengers in their entitled pilgrimage has touched the families, hence calling for the need for road safety and far more preparedness for the lives of the travellers.
