Paris: The Eiffel Tower was evacuated on Sunday, August 13, 2023, after a bomb threat was called in to French police. The threat was made to the tourist attraction’s security office at around 11:00 AM local time.
Police immediately sealed off the area around the Eiffel Tower and evacuated the 324-meter tall tower. Visitors and tourists were also evacuated from the Champ de Mars, the park located at the foot of the tower.
Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene and searched the tower for explosives. After a thorough search, the experts gave the all-clear and the tower was reopened to the public at around 2:00 PM local time.
The bomb threat is currently being investigated by French police. No arrests have been made at this time.
This is the second time in recent months that the Eiffel Tower has been evacuated due to a bomb threat. In May 2023, the tower was evacuated after a suspicious package was found near the entrance. The package was later found to be harmless.
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. It is visited by millions of people each year. The tower is also a popular target for terrorists. In 1995, the tower was the target of a terrorist attack that killed seven people and injured 100 others.
The bomb threat on Sunday is a reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism in France. It is also a reminder of the importance of security at tourist attractions.
