A day after Muhammad Yunus, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and an economist, was chosen to lead the interim government in Bangladesh, at least 24 people, including an Indonesian national, were burnt alive by a mob in Bangladesh at a starred hotel owned by a leader of Awami League party.
A day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country following a violent crackdown on a student-led uprising, BNP leader and former prime minister Khaleda Zia was released from jail. She expressed concerns over the nationwide violence, vandalism, and looting of state resources.
Baba Ramdev On Hindu Temples Vandalised
Meanwhile, a Hindu association in Bangladesh claimed that hundreds of Hindu houses, businesses, and temples have been vandalized since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina. Yoga guru Ramdev said India must stand in solidarity of Hindu minorities in neighboring Bangladesh and take measures to protect them. He condemned reports of targeted attacks on houses, temples and other business establishments run by the country’s Hindu population.
Ramdev termed these ‘well-planned’ attacks by fundamentalist forces as “shameful and dangerous” and called India to do all it can to protect them. “I fear that India will need to remain vigilant so that the honour and dignity of the mothers, sisters and daughters of our Hindu brothers are not at stake. The entire country will have to stand with its minority Hindu brothers with full strength,” the yoga guru said.
Hindus constitute about 8 per cent of Bangladesh’s 170 million people and have historically largely supported Hasina’s Awami League party, which identifies as largely secular, instead of the opposition bloc that includes a hardline Islamist party.
