On Monday, a train that was passing in southern Switzerland derailed prematurely following an avalanche that had hit the Swiss Alps, resulting in the injury of a number of passengers. Regional police said the accident took place around 7.00 am (0600 GMT) near Goppenstein. The police have verified that there were at least 80 passengers in the plane during the derailment.
In one of the posts on the social media platform X, the regional police wrote: “Derailment of train, most likely with injuries, with the emphasis on the immediate interest in ensuring the safety of passengers. The Swiss Federal Railways operator, federal train transport (CFF) went on record on its official webpage that train traffic in the area between Goppenstein and Brig was interrupted because of an avalanche, which highlights how services to the local transportation are disrupted.
Rescue teams are underway and emergency teams are attending to the injured and ensuring the safety of the affected train and tracks. According to local news stories, the trains that operated on the route are suspended until 4:00 pm local time as the authorities are still striving to clean up the debris and make sure that people are not in danger.
Avalanches are a familiar occurrence in the Swiss Alps especially at the time of winter and may become a serious danger in mountain transportation. Authorities have warned people of caution and demanded that people should not visit the region as rescue and recovery activities go on.
