Manhattan: A bus collision in New York City on Thursday night left at least 80 people injured. The accident occurred at First Avenue and 23rd Street in Manhattan, where a double-decker tour bus and an MTA bus collided.
The FDNY said it received a call just before 7 p.m. ET for a “major vehicle accident.” The double-decker bus was carrying tourists from China, and the MTA bus was carrying passengers from the Upper West Side.
The impact of the collision caused the double-decker bus to overturn, and both buses sustained significant damage. Firefighters had to use ladders to rescue passengers from the upper deck of the double-decker bus.
Of the 80 people injured, 14 were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The rest of the injured were treated at the scene.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but police believe that one of the buses may have run a red light.
This is the latest in a series of bus accidents in New York City. In February, a bus driver was killed after his bus crashed into a building in Queens. And in January, a bus carrying passengers from the Bronx to Manhattan crashed into a utility pole, killing one person and injuring 15 others.
The city’s Department of Transportation is investigating all of these accidents to see if there are any common factors that could be addressed to prevent future accidents.
The bus collision is a reminder of the dangers of public transportation. While buses are generally safe, accidents can happen. It is important to be aware of your surroundings and to take precautions to stay safe when riding the bus.
If you are injured in a bus accident, you should seek medical attention immediately. You may also be eligible to file a personal injury lawsuit against the bus company or driver. An experienced personal injury attorney can help you understand your legal rights and options.
