Shanghai: Authorities on Thursday appealed to all its residents to co-operate with the restrictions imposed as the city entered the fourth day of its stringent lockdown. With the surge in asymptomatic cases fuelled by stealth Omicron, Shanghai has been relatively enduring the worst outbreak since the virus was first detected in Wuhan in late 2019.

On Thursday, the National Health Commission in the last 24 hours recorded 1,803 fresh infections. Of the new local infections, 1,340 were reported in Jilin, 355 in Shanghai, 19 in Heilongjiang, 15 in Henan, and 11 each in Fujian and Guangdong, a local media house reported citing the commission.

Taking to its social media account on WeChat, the Shanghai govt in a letter to its residents said, “ we are grateful for your efforts and sacrifices- as it sticks to the draconian ZERO COVID Policy to curb the spread tracing contacts and centrally quarantining all positive cases. “Pandemic prevention and control work have brought much inconvenience to people, it read and further said- “ Some of you have been in quarantine and lockdown for a long time. The city deeply appreciates everyone’s understanding and cooperation.”

The plea came after authorities of the financial hub, reported 5,298 locally transmitted new asymptomatic infections and 355 symptomatic cases on Wednesday.36 infections are cited to be foreign arrivals. Out of these two are suspected to be arrivals outside mainland China.
