The maximum impact of this variant is being seen in America. It is spreading like wildfire in America. BA.3.2 is actually a descendant of Omicron. Omicron was the same variant that shook the entire world in late 2021. However, BA.3.2 is quite different from previous variants.
Health experts say a new variant of Covid-19, Cicada BA.3.2, is quietly spreading around the world. It has an unusually high number of mutations. It could also impact India. However, health experts are currently unsure about when and how much of an impact it will have.
Researchers first identified BA.3.2 in Africa in November 2024. It began its global journey in 2025, and by February 2026, it had spread to 23 countries. The first case in the United States was detected in a traveler in June 2025. Today, traces of this variant are being found in wastewater monitoring in 29 US states. Sewage monitoring is considered the most accurate way to understand the spread of variants, and data suggests that this variant is spreading very quietly (under the radar).
According to experts, 70 to 75 genetic changes have been observed in its spike protein. The spike protein is the part of the virus that helps it enter our body’s cells. The challenge now is that our vaccines learn to recognize and attack this spike protein. However, when the protein itself changes so much, the vaccine may be fooled into recognizing it.
To identify this invisible threat, scientists have adopted a unique “spying” method—wastewater monitoring. Traces of this “Cicada” variant were found in sewage samples in 29 US states before patients even began to overflow hospitals. This technique warns us weeks before the disease spreads. However, it is worrying that such data sharing systems have declined worldwide since 2022. Experts believe that if we slow down this “biological spying,” it will be impossible to detect the next major virus attack in time.
