On Friday, members of the Baloch community conducted a demonstration outside the United Nations headquarters in New York, demanding independence of Balochistan and urging the international community to take note of their long-standing grievances. Protesters moved around with placards and banners inscribed with the words: Free Balochistan, in an effort to raise concerns over the claims of oppression, forced disappearances and political oppressions in the region.
Sami Baloch, a Baloch National Movement (BNM) member, greatly criticised Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who addressed the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session on world peace and the Palestine issue, yet said nothing about what he called the Pakistani occupation of Balochistan.
Hereby, the Pakistani Prime Minister told the Assembly today, “They desire peace in Palestine. But what about us, the Baloch?” In addressing the media, Sami was inquiring. He alleged that Balochistan has been forcibly occupied by Pakistan since 1948, and accused the state of extrajudicial killings and dissident oppression. Even in courts, our people are being killed. Months of imprisonment of our peaceful protesters and leaders without charges had been witnessed, he added.
Sami said that Pakistan can never demand peace in the world when it apparently does not care about the Baloch people. He claimed that in case Islamabad genuinely wants stability in this region, it needs to start with the situation in Balochistan. He said that if there will ever be peace in the region, then Balochistan should be free.
In his speech to the UNGA, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif gave attention to the mounting humanitarian crisis in Gaza. According to a report, he denounced what he called illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and a genocide offensive in Gaza. The killing of a six-year-old Hind Rajab, whose last phone call was made famous due to the war, was another event he cited.
