Since the Afghanistan turmoil began after the Taliban captured Kabul on Aug 15, the global leaders have been evacuating people out of the country. Apart from their own people, the country heads are also evacuating Afghan refugees and giving them shelter in their respective countries. India is no less in the race. To date, the Indian govt has managed to bring back 626 Afghans from the Taliban-occupied country amongst which there are 228 Indian nationals.

Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that amongst them there were 77 Afghan Sikhs as well. He also said that the ones who are brought back do not include afghans working in the Indian embassy. On speaking about the bringing back of the 3 Swaroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib from the Afghan province, Puri became emotional. He said, “It was a very emotional and moving experience for me as a Sikh to be able to pay obeisance. During the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, when the Gurudwara at Kabul was attacked, the Central government facilitated 383 Afghan Sikhs to come to India. During the latest developments in Afghanistan, seven evacuation flights were organized”.

He further added that the “sewadars” who have come from Afghan have thanked the PM for such a humanitarian act. “The sewadars who have come (from Afghanistan) have thanked PM Modi and Mother India that we are able to provide sanctuary and comfort to people in distress, particularly to Hindus and Sikhs”, he said. Meanwhile, PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin are in talks regarding the ongoing Afghan turmoil to bring back the Indian nationals home safely.
