Nigeria: Disastrous flood hit Nigeria leaving nation crippled with over 600 people dead and millions displaced. According the minister of disaster management, the recent floods in the Western African nation has become an ‘overwhelming disaster’ as most of the states were not fully prepared despite several warnings issued.
More than 1.3 million people have to leave their homes as a result of the tragedy. “Unfortunately, over 603 lives have been lost as of October 16, 2022”, said Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq.
The National Emergency Management Agency reported that the rainy season typically starts in June, it has been particularly heavy in August. Flooding entirely damaged more than 82,000 homes and approximately 11,000 hectares of agricultural land.
Earlier in 2012, flooding aaffected over 2.1 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa and killed 363 individuals. The region is particularly affected negatively by the effects of climate change. Rice growers have warned sudden impact on prices as the country has forbidden rice imports.
