Auckland: New Zealand authorities declared a state of emergency after the nation’s biggest city, Auckland flooded after torrential rain. The Police said two people are dead and 2 are missing due to these rains. Widespread flooding caused hazardous driving conditions and forced the city’s airport to close. The authorities have cancelled all flights for the next few hours.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins was flying to the city n a military plan to assess the damage. He said that the rain has hit the city hard and the citizens will have to brace for the fact that there could be more rain. “My travel to Auckland this morning has been delayed due to weather conditions. I’m continuing to monitor the situation from Wellington. Govt. will provide as much help and support as we can”, tweeted the prime minister.
Auckland’s MetService claimed that it received 250 milimeters (10 inches) of rainfall throughout the day. Emergency services have faced huge numbers of calls for help and people have been urgent to contact these services only in case of life-threatening danger. Further the MetService recently tweeted the rain radar claiming rains were easing in some areas while picking up in others.
