Hague: Over 1500 climate activists have been arrested in the Netherlands during a demonstration against the Dutch fossil fuel subsidies. The Extinction Rebellion climate group blocked a section of a motorway in the center of the city, after which the Dutch Police arrested them.
The Dutch Police had used the water cannon to disperse activists, who blocked a major road in the city. Several Dutch celebrities were also among the protestors, including Carice van Houten, best known for her role as Melisandre in hit TV series, Game of Thrones.
The protest was called for by Extinction Rebellion, a group that originated in the UK. Earlier on May 13, the group had announced the protest that will use non-violent albeit disruptive protest methods.
While the Extinction Rebellion claimed that there were 7000 participants in the protest, the Dutch police confirmed 40 of the 1579 people arrested would be prosecuted for vandalism.
