Uttarakhand will be implementing the Uniform Civil Code on Monday, making it the first state in independent India to put such a law into effect.
“UCC is just an offering made by our state in the great ‘yagya’ being performed by the Prime Minister to make the country a developed, organised, harmonious and self-reliant nation,” CM Pushkar Singh Dhami was quoted as saying in a statement.
The bill, which sought to replace the old personal laws that govern marriage, divorce, succession and live-in relationships, was passed in the Uttarakhand Assembly amid the opposition’s demand to refer it to the select committee of the House.
Highlighting its benefits, Chief Minister Dhami said that the UCC will give the right to equality to everyone without any discrimination on matters like marriage, maintenance, inheritance and divorce. “The UCC will mainly remove the discrimination against women,” he said.
Key Points Of Uniform Civil Code
Eliminating the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate children: The law aims to abolish the distinction between legitimate and illegitimate children concerning property rights. All children are recognized as biological offspring.
Inclusivity of adopted and biologically born children: The law would ensure that children adopted, born through surrogacy, or conceived via assisted reproductive technology will be treated equally to biological children.
Equal property rights after death: Following a person’s death, the law will grant equal property rights to the spouse and children. Additionally, equal rights would be extended to the dead person’s parents.
