A tragic accident happened on Saturday afternoon on Mumbai’s Senapati Bapat Flyover when a Mahindra SUV crashed into a kaali peeli (black-yellow) taxi whose 36 year old man was killed, while another 26 year old was trapped under the vehicle and died while being taken to hospital. It was around 1:15 pm when the Santro taxi was on its way to Chinchpokli and the SUV coming from the Bandra side.
Reports say that the taxi driver as well as the female passenger died on the spot in the collision. Since then, the driver of the SUV is in police custody for further investigation into cause of crash.
Horrifically, the images from the accident scene show the extent of the impact from the collision. The taxi crash is emphasized in the focal point by the female passenger seen partially hanging out of the car window of the taxi. The bonnet and front seats had been completely mangled, showing the taxi was massive in its impact.
The SUV was damaged similarly. The windshield was shattered, the front tires were destroyed and the bonnet was crushed. Inside the SUV, images show deflated airbags which suggest they deployed upon impact, helping save the driver’s life.
The situation was then managed and authorities came to the scene shortly after the accident, cordoning off the area. Traffic was diverted away from the wreckage and emergency responders worked to clear it, and all while making sure that there was no more congestion.
Cause of the accident is still being investigated. The collision appears to have been caused by high speed or reckless driving. CCTV from the area is also being looked at by the police to work out what happened in the run up to this fatal crash.
