The Bengal Files, the controversial and the most discussed movie of the year, the latest release by Vivek Agnihotri, debuted in theaters on Friday, but has not begun its box office run successfully. The film was not released in West Bengal because of a blockade, but it had trouble entering the market on the opening weekend despite good pre-release anticipation.
By day 4 (Monday) in India, the film has a net of 1.10 crore; the early industry estimates suggest a total collection of 7.85 crore. The last count will be verified by taking into consideration the number of late-night shows.
The Bengal Files started with 1.75 crore on Friday, and then on Saturday it started with 2.25 crore (an increase of 28.57). On Sunday, collections increased further to 2.75 crore (22.22% growth), which indicates a positive trend on weekends. The news was, however, very low on Monday, bringing the motion picture to respectable levels and leaving total collections just short of 8 crore.
Challenges in the film are also brought out in occupancy trends. On Monday, the national occupancy was 18.24%. Morning shows had a low rate of 9.99, and this increased to 17.10 and then 21.66, and 24.19 during the evening, afternoon, and night shows, respectively. The movie is presently operating on fewer than 250 screens in India, which does not grant it much exposure.
The regional data display mixed results. The region with the highest shows was the Delhi-NCR area, with 217 shows, with an average of 16.5 occupancy. The movie was shown in 193 shows in Mumbai, having a higher occupancy of 23.5%. Interestingly, Chennai, which had only 11 screenings registered the highest occupancy country-wide with a 34.33% occupancy, whilst Bengaluru registered 34.25% occupancy backed by 69 shows.
