Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Passes Away: Veteran classical singer of Banaras Sangeet Gharana and Padma Vibhushan Pandit Chhannulal Mishra has passed away. He breathed his last at 4.15 am today at his daughter’s house in Mirzapur at the age of 89. He was ill for some time and was undergoing treatment at the Institute of Medical Science of Banaras Hindu University. He was discharged after his health improved. His last rites will be performed today at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi. His death has plunged the music world into mourning. Pandit Chhannulal Mishra had taken the classical singing of Khayal and Eastern Thumri style to new heights.
Prime Minister condoled the demise of Pandit Chhannulal and wrote on X, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of the renowned classical singer Pandit Channulal Mishra ji. He remained dedicated throughout his life to the enrichment of Indian art and culture. Along with taking classical music to the masses, he also made an invaluable contribution to establishing Indian tradition on the global stage. It is my good fortune that I always received his affection and blessings. In the year 2014, he was also my proposer from the Varanasi seat. In this hour of grief, I express my deepest condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti!”.
Pandit Chhannulal’s body will be brought to Varanasi by 11 a.m. on Thursday. People will be able to pay their last respects during the day, and the last rites will be performed at 7 p.m. Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was a proposer for PM Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He has four daughters and a son. His wife and one daughter passed away four years ago.
Daughter Namrata said that Pandit Chhannulal Mishra was admitted to the ICU of Sir Sunder Lal Hospital of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi from Mirzapur in September due to chest problems. Pandit Chhannulal Mishra had suffered a minor heart attack, after which he was admitted to the ICU at BHU. Tests revealed a chest infection and anemia.
