Islamabad: Pakistan’s political landscape saw a significant shift on Saturday as the government reportedly passed a Constitutional amendment paving the way for Army Chief General Asim Munir to assume the powerful new position of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF). The CDF role is designed to ensure greater coordination and establish a unified command structure across Pakistan’s Army, Navy, and Air Force, effectively consolidating top military authority under General Munir’s command.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, presented in Parliament, proposes changes to Article 243 of the Constitution, which governs matters related to the armed forces. Under the amendment, the President will appoint both the Army chief and the Chief of Defence Forces on the advice of the Prime Minister. absorbs the powers of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) upon the current incumbent’s term expiry this month. The new legislation also grants lifelong privileges to the rank of Field Marshal.

The bill also specifies that the Chief of Army Staff, who will also serve as the Chief of Defence Forces, will appoint the head of the National Strategic Command in consultation with the Prime Minister. The head of the National Strategic Command will be from the Pakistan Army, it adds.

India Dismisses Nuclear Test Claim, Stays Vigilant

Meanwhile, the development comes amid heightened regional tension, partially fueled by US President Donald Trump’s recent claim that Pakistan has “secretly” been testing nuclear weapons. When asked about the alleged nuclear developments in Pakistan, Singh said India was not rattled by such reports. “Those who want to test, let them; how can we stop them?” he said. However, he reiterated New Delhi’s preparedness, saying, “Whatever happens, we are prepared for any eventuality.”

Addressing the renewed security concerns, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh adopted a firm stance, stating that India is “prepared for any eventuality.” The External Affairs Ministry also “took note” of Trump’s comment, framing it in the context of Pakistan’s alleged history of “secret and illegal” nuclear activities and past proliferation networks. While dismissing the need to be pressured or dictated to, the Minister affirmed India’s commitment to protecting its national interests and maintaining vigilance along its borders.
