The Indian government’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Thursday signed a landmark agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The contract will procure 97 indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The total cost of the contract is ₹62,370 crore (excluding taxes). It includes 68 single-seat fighter aircraft and 29 twin-seat trainer aircraft, as well as related equipment and support systems.

The procurement of the Tejas Mk1A is a key component of the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives. This state-of-the-art indigenously developed aircraft by HAL will not only strengthen the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force but will also mark another significant milestone in making the country globally self-reliant in the defense production sector.

The induction of Tejas Mk1A aircraft will provide the Air Force with a fast, modern, and reliable fighter aircraft. This will boost existing squadron strength and fill the gap created by the phaseout of older aircraft such as the MiG-21.
