Mexico: A massive explosion followed by a fire at a supermarket in northern Mexico on Saturday has tragically claimed the lives of at least 23 people, with 11 others reported injured, according to local officials. The devastating incident occurred at a Waldo’s store in the city center of Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state.

State Governor Alfonso Durazo expressed his sorrow, confirming that a number of the victims found were minors. “This is a sad day for Sonora, especially for the families who lost a loved one,” Durazo said in a video message, promising that the state government would take all necessary actions to support the affected families and individuals.

Emergency, security, and health services immediately rushed to the scene. The injured victims were quickly transported to various hospitals throughout Hermosillo for urgent treatment. Preliminary investigations led by the Sonora Attorney General’s office suggest that the deaths were largely caused by the inhalation of toxic gases.

Authorities have so far ruled out any intentional act or violent attack against civilians, with early working assumptions focusing on a possible accidental cause, such as a faulty electric transformer located inside the store. Governor Durazo has pledged a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the exact cause of the blast and hold those responsible accountable.

The tragedy prompted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to offer her heartfelt condolences and announce the dispatch of a federal support team to assist the victims’ families and the injured. The local government also canceled scheduled celebrations for the Day of the Dead holiday in a mark of respect for the victims.
