Kolkata rape case: CV Ananda Bose, the West Bengal governor, on Sunday, directed Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee to replace the police chief and summon an emergency cabinet meeting. The governor believes the state government cannot handle the current state law and order situation.

The governor stated that the state must operate according to the Constitution and the rule of law. “The ostrich-like attitude will not pay, and the state must address the public demand to remove the Police Commissioner of Kolkata,” the governor said.

Protests demanding the culprits be nabbed have also rocked other states and state capitals. CV Ananda Bose has criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in the state for its handling of the case. He is on record saying the government cannot evade responsibility and remain silent on the disturbing developments in the state.

Kolkata Rape Case Supreme Court Hearing Amid Protests

The Supreme Court is set to hear on Monday, September 9, the case involving the brutal murder and alleged rape of a 31-year-old woman trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident occurred on August 9 and the trainee doctor was found dead in the hospital’s seminar hall.

In the last hearing, the court termed the rape and murder as “horrific” and ordered a 10-member National Task Force (NTF), led by Surgeon Vice-Admiral Arti Sarin, to formulate a protocol for ensuring the safety and security of doctors and other healthcare professionals.

The NTF also includes prominent members such as D Nageshwar Reddy, M Srinivas, Pratima Murthy, Goverdhan Dutt Puri, Saumitra Rawat, Anita Saxena, Pallavi Saple, and Padma Srivastava. The apex court warned the West Bengal government against using state power against peaceful protesters and urged sensitivity in handling the situation.

Meanwhile, the parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered in RG Kar Hospital have made new allegations against the police. According to them, Kolkata Police started trying to destroy evidence immediately after the incident and hidden facts while handing over the case to CBI. The doctor’s mother, who was participating in a huge protest, said that whether it is the government, administration or police, no one is cooperating with us since the beginning of the case. The doctor’s mother also said that I requested that the protest should continue. It should continue until we get justice.
