A horrifying case of road rage was reported on the Latur-Ausa highway in Maharastra recently when a woman and her little daughter succumbed to the injuries after another driver deliberately hit their motorcycle – he was reportedly drunk. The fatal occurrence happened on the evening of September 29 after the two drivers had engaged in a disagreement over reckless driving.
Sadiq Sheikh was with his wife Ikra and two children, Nadia, 6, and Ahad, 3, when the family’s car was overtaken by a speeding car of a drunk man. After this near escape, Sadiq went to the driver to confront him about reckless driving. But that spiraled into an argument because the discussion got high-pitched. The furious driver eased up a little, and Sadiq managed to overtake him, but not long before, the man suddenly hit the rear of the family’s motorcycle, causing a nasty crash.
The outcome was tragic; five persons were badly injured, including a beautiful woman, Ikra Sheikh, and her little daughter, Nadia; both were killed instantly. Sadiq and their son Ahad were critically injured in the blast and were rushed to a government hospital in Latur for treatment.
Sub-Inspector Sunil Rajitwad at Ausa police station said five people were traveling in the car at the time of the incident. Digambar has been identified as Patole, Krishna Waghe, Basavaraj Bappa Dhotre, Manoj Mane, and Mudame, and all have been arrested. They have charges of reckless driving and causing death by negligence driving under the influence of alcohol.
This tragic event extends the problem of road aggression and the results of risky car handling, thus, the compulsory demand for improved compliance with traffic rules and popularization of road safety. This sad case boils down to justice for Ikra and Nadia, who will be sorely missed by the community they left behind.
