Dhurandhar by Aditya Dhar has become one of the largest blockbusters in Hindi cinema that has rewritten the history of the box office with a global gross income of more than 1300 crore. The phenomenal performance of the film has not only put its sequel on the trajectory of a huge opening but it has also made Dhurandhar one of the most profitable Indian films ever.
Dhurandhar which was initially planned as a single large feature, was later changed significantly in structure weeks before it was released. The producers and director Aditya Dhar chose to divide the project into two portions after realising that the film could not be shortened to less than six hours. Although the decision was a risky one, as the effectiveness of the second part was solely determined by how the first one was received, it still played out to the advantage of the movie. The two-part structure enabled the makers to enjoy the theatrical returns to the fullest, which was the potential doubling of the earning power of the film.
Dhurandhar earned around ₹1,004 crore in India and another 33 million dollars in the international regions at the box office. Domestic earnings have been estimated to number about 360 crore, which is shared by the producers, and almost 15 million abroad. Outside of theatrical, the film had a decent performance in the non-theatrical space. A report by Pinkvilla suggests that Dhurandhar received approximately 140 crores in the digital streaming, satellite broadcasting and music rights.
Having a total recovery of almost 650 crore the film has easily overtaken its expenses. The total production budget of 400 crore is divided between the two movies, the landing cost of Dhurandhar Part 1 goes to about 250 crore in the marketing expenses. Consequently, the film has earned a remarkable contribution to profit of approximately ₹400 crore, even surpassing large pan-Indian movements such as RRR and KGF Chapter 2, and establishing its presence as one of the most lucrative Indian movies ever.
